Art Book 2024
For the fourth time, Sofia Paper Art Fest presents the format “Art Book”. It is part of its most prestigious section – Paper Art Biennial and it will be presented in Gallery Serdica. The art book occupies the position of a rare and boutique format in paper art, associated with collector’s editions that often transcend the idea of a book and enter the territory of objects with elements of the book, in which typography, calligraphy or the use of material from old printed publications is involved.
Some of the authors engage in the transformation of old books into original objects. Others create distinctive editions from elegant papers with fine printing and designs inspired by the Eastern traditions of Japan, China and Korea. And some show works with allegorical messages to the viewer about pressing social matters.
“Art book” is becoming a favorite section of those who seek the sacred sound of the book and its mysterious world. The artists represent Australia, Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America.
The selection of the 26 artists from 13 countries will present different trends in this art field. Well-established names in this section are: Leticia Burgos (Argentina), Wilhelm Schramm (Austria), Jeannine De Raeymaecker (Belgium), Peter Lazarov (Bulgaria), Veska Abad(Bulgaria), Daniela Zekina (Bulgaria), Alberto Favaro (Italy), Kenji Sato (Japan), Pat Hodson (USA).
Previous editions of this format have been shown at the National History Museum in 2013 and at the central building of the Regional History Museum – Sofia in 2015 and 2022. It is no exaggeration to say that each show strongly intrigues viewers with its unusual creative conceits, and the selection in the current exhibition remains true to this trend. The sheer variety of creative solutions reveals the vast possibilities of this art.
This year “Art Book” opens on June 4 at 6 p.m. in Gallery Serdica (Sofia, 90B Tsar Samuil St., fl. 2, Women’s Market) and is on view from Tuesday to Saturday (11 a.m. – 6 p.m.).
The exhibition is organized by Amateras Foundation and Gallery Serdica with the support of National Culture Fund, Sofia Municipality, Vazradzhdane Markets Ltd., and is part of the Calendar of Cultural Events of Sofia Municipality 2024.
