Silent Dialogue
Exhibition by Nexus
The autumn panel of Sofia Paper Art Fest 2024 includes 5 exhibitions of contemporary Japanese art. The second exhibition in a row, also part of Biennial for Paper Art 2024, will be presented in the Triangular Tower of Serdica, Regional History Museum – Sofia.
This year the 35th Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria are dedicated to three important anniversaries in the bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Japan – 115 years since the first official contacts, 85 years since the establishment and 65 years since the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. On this occasion, the exhibition presents a selection of art by the longest-lasting Japanese partner of the Foundation – NEXUS Association from the city of Fukuoka. These long friendship and fruitful collaboration date back to 2012, resulting in dozens of events in both countries, over 100 artists represented in solo and group exhibitions, five residencies in Bulgaria and two in Japan. Many of the artists became winners of prestigious paper art awards of the SPAF and left deep traces in the presentation of Japanese contemporary art in Bulgaria.
The exhibition “Silent Dialogue” is a selection of outstanding works by the creators of the association: Kakuko Ishii, Ichiro Matsuo, Mitsuru Kuroki, Toru Kurita and Jeong Moon. Each of them displays a characteristic medium as the works were specially created for the space of the Triangular Tower of Serdica (RHM – Sofia). The exposition features different trends in contemporary Japanese art, presenting light and interactive installations, video, objects, panels, sculpture in paper, wood, metal and ceramics.
The exhibition is opened by representatives of the Embassy of Japan in Bulgaria, in the presence of Kakuko Ishii, Ichiro Matsuo, Toru Kurita, and Jeong Moon, who have specially arrived for the exhibition.
“Silent Dialogue” is on view between September 4 and October 4, 2024.
Partners of the project are Ministry of Culture, Embassy of Japan in Bulgaria, NEXUS, and Sofia Municipality.
The exhibition is realized with the financial support of Star Motors Bulgaria, programs “Visual Arts” of the Ministry of Culture, “Creation ’23” by the National Culture Fund, and the Calendar of Cultural Events of Sofia Municipality 2024.
