From June 6 to July 5, 2025, in the space of the Triangle Tower of Serdica (Regional History Museum – Sofia), the exhibition “Paper Cosmos” – Chinese contemporary paper art will take place, part of a long-term cultural exchange between Bulgaria and China. The project is initiated by Amateras Foundation and the Beijing Association for External Cultural Trade and is dedicated to ecological and innovative contemporary art.

The exhibition is part of Sofia Paper Art Fest 2025 and aims to create sustainable bridges of cooperation in the field of art and cultural diplomacy and to present the work of established contemporary Chinese artists working with paper as an artistic medium – from traditional techniques to experimental installations.

The exhibition gives the audience the opportunity to experience the richness, philosophy and contemporary interpretation of a centuries-old cultural tradition in a new artistic context. The selection presents 28 artworks that illustrate different movements and approaches in contemporary Chinese paper art – from installations and sculptures to conceptual interpretations and delicate forms of traditional paper work. Curators and participants from China present works that combine mastery and aesthetic depth.
Official representatives of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bulgaria, the curator of the exhibition and some of the participating artists will attend the opening. After the opening, they will continue their participation within a residency program in the town of Levski, including a joint exhibition and creative workshop dedicated to traditional Chinese techniques and cultural exchange with Bulgarian artists.

Bulgaria: Amateras Foundation – Todor Todorov, artistic director of SPAF, and Daniela Todorova, curator of SPAF.
CHINA: Shawn Huang, curator; Wu Xiaoming, artistic director; Jin Xiaomen and Chen Yu, exhibition coordinators.
Participating artists are: Zhang Xu, Kan Changmei, Li Qiang, Hu Qinwu, Wu Xiaohai, WangJi, Zhou Jirong, Hu Yi, Jiang Zuqing, Tian Wei, Li Hongbo, Liu Guang, Ge Qiang, Bai Qizhong, He Haifeng, Kong Fanxing, Li Xuefeng, Wei Huidong, Wu Xiaoming, Wu Yuning, Zhang Gezhan, Zhao Sixing, Qiu Jichuan.

The exhibition is part of Sofia Paper Art Fest 2025 and aims to deepen the connections between the artistic communities of the two countries, encouraging sustainable forms of international cooperation.
The exhibition is realized with the kind support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, which actively supports cultural dialogue and the development of contemporary platforms for exchange between the artistic scenes of the two countries.
